Falcon Wharf - TEC Case Study
Timbmet Silverman engineers bespoke timber solution for landmark London apartments.
A custom designed and manufactured engineered timber solution for doors and windows has made its mark at Falcon Wharf, a landmark development of 124 apartments from developer George Wimpey City, overlooking the Thames in London.
Timbmet Silverman teamed up with Soundcraft Joinery to create the internal joinery solution, which was a challenging task given the prestige nature of the project and the conditions at the riverside site.
Originally supplied with an outline design for a sliding door and side window in one screen, with a light coloured timber preferred by the architects, Soundcraft discussed the options for using ash with their regular hardwoods supplier, Timbmet Silverman.
However, the design requirements together with the humidity levels, temperature changes and acoustic insulation values led Timbmet Silverman to suggest that Soundcraft consider a special development of the TEC engineered timber range.
The final solution was a custom designed component which has a laminated veneer lumber (LVL) core, with all materials sourced from SFI certified forests, overlaid with a ponderosa pine solid timber laminate. Separate sections, with individual compositions, were manufactured for each joinery application in the project.
The component provided excellent stability, low movement, good grain match and high quality. As an engineered product, the components were delivered in exact lengths with a high degree of accuracy in all dimensions, helping Soundcraft.s productivity, as Joinery Director Jeremy Murphy commented:
.The TEC products arrived in excellent packaging with no damage and we were able to use every piece we ordered, unlike solid timber where we allow up to 30% waste when machining. We could also be certain that there would be no shrinkage or stability problems with the finished items and the client and architect are delighted with the finished product appearance.
.Overall, I feel that moving more production to TEC engineered components could be the way forward for our business, especially when it is backed by the service and support Timbmet Silverman provided during the development process..
Commenting on the result, Justin Hayward, Timbmet Silverman.s TEC Manager, said:
.This project demonstrates our ability to take a set of specification challenges and work with the joinery manufacturer to create a bespoke solution. This special engineered timber material was thoroughly tested to ensure it met all the developer.s requirements. It has been a genuine partnership approach to ensure Soundcraft and, in turn, George Wimpey City, achieved what was required..
A stunning iconic design, the Falcon Wharf development is set over 17 floors of curvilinear glass, steel and timber, offering 360-degree views. Each apartment has an enclosed winter garden, providing permanent passive ventilation by drawing in a continuous stream of fresh air.
